hullnow - Urban Design within the City of Hull

The images shown on this section of the web site are hypothetical concept examples and do not exist in reality.
These 3D visuals, supporting text and photographs are intended solely for evaluation purposes. They have been produced as an example
case study for specific use on the hullnow.co.uk website.

Visual communication is the key to making projects successful. Getting your message across clearly and precisely in a form that everyone can understand means that you will always achieve maximum results. This is so important when you are using public funding.

For the last 15 to 20 years, technology - when combined with the correct skills - has allowed us to communicate our ideas more powerfully than ever before. This means that people now have more opportunity than ever before to get involved with public projects and to voice their opinions - and yet time and again, we repeatedly fail to meet public expectations.

We need to find more exciting ways of applying changes to our local communities. We need to engage younger people into the process. We need to keep people informed of all the major decisions. Maybe then our urban communities would take more pride in their surroundings. If we are able to instil a sense of belonging and pride in our urban communities then maybe these communities will begin to have more respect for our Government and Regional Authorities - something which is so lacking now.

A number of hypothetical concept examples are given below. These are linked with an Opinion Portal, where users can vote for whatever they feel is the best of several different ideas. We can use this tool to see whether or not it is possible to find better ways of presenting creative ideas. We always aim to have a more forward thinking approach!

Concept Examples

Tide and Time

Tide and Time
The Tide and Time Clock is designed to function as a mechanical tide clock. It uses the letter H to chart the daily ebb and flood of the tides. It makes a very dramatic statement about the city's maritime name. Who said the word HULL is not marketable?

No symbols; no logos; no straplines - just Hull, constantly changing and completely in touch with its maritime past and future; an architectural chance to put Hull back on the map.

Heritage Dock

Heritage Dock
The Heritage Dock concept shows how St Andrew’s dock could look if it was restored to its original water-filled condition. Throughout the world the story is the same: docks have been filled in because of industrial decline only to be dug back out some years later at massive cost to capitalise on modern tourism and the leisure markets.

Angling Area

Angling Area
The Dock Fishing Area is designed to give a safe public space where enthusiasts can fish the Humber. It is split into various heights giving better facilities to accommodate rapid tide variations. It also has built in down lighting for night fishing.

Memorial

Memorial
The memorial wave is a tribute to the many people who lost their lives at sea. This is not your typical memorial of concrete and brass plaques. It’s a much more uplifting and modern approach to capturing the full tragic circumstances of past events. It's a positive reflection of the past for our future generations.

Reflections Remembrance Garden

Reflections Remembrance Garden
This is an open planned area showing a past community. It portrays the fishing history of Hull with imagery very much related to the former St Andrew’s fish dock area. Its message is to highlight the importance of communities and community spirit. The billboards here may not advertise the latest mobile phone or deodorant but you will get a sense of reflection.

Visitor Centre

Visitor Centre
This is a building you'll either love or hate! The look of the building could represent anything: a whale, a fish, the upturned hull of a ship - even the holes for the windows could be the eyelets of a sail.

Whatever it looks like it has one quality: it's unique. It's a real eye-opener and talking point and it's a way of driving home the city's connection with the sea.

Memorial Wall

Memorial Wall
The Memorial Wall is designed to feature some of the Hull trawlers which proudly sailed out of St. Andrew's Dock but were destined never to return. Considering that 20 Hull men were once lost in just a single tragedy - and that this happened again and again - surely it warrants having a place that is a unique remembrance memorial? The Memorial Wall represents a place where the City of Hull can show that the fishing men of the past have not been forgotten.

This is Yorkshire Information Centre

This is Yorkshire Information Centre
The Yorkshire Information Centre is probably one of the most important aspects in the City of Hull’s infrastructure. Not many cities can boast about being the Gateway to Europe.

We owe P&O Ferries a great deal. They bring on average 1400 people a day through this city, from the many hundreds of bike riders on their way to the Isle of Man TT each year through to the every day businessman or tourist.

Hull must capitalise on this.

Marine History Centre

Marine History Centre
The Marine History Centre is a focal point that is designed to enhance knowledge and understanding of the sea and it's vast history, both mythical and factual.

The centre features an IMAX screen that will immerse you into a prehistoric ocean. State-of-the-art computer animations bring these creatures back to life.

The centre also looks at our commercial history associated with the sea; Kingfisher Charts, P&O Ferries, Seven Seas to name just a few.

But one of the most important aspects of the centre is that it is interactive; you choose what you want to see and remember you probably won’t be the only person in there, so you may have to compromise. If you’ve got kids, good luck!
