This betrayal of the great sacrifice that these men gave, really upsets me. The Hull City council should face up to its responsibilities and give us, what we all know should happen, thats the renovation of these historic buildings and dock, to preserve all this for future generations.

Looks great, regards quality of design and materials, but sensitive to the history of the area. That invites all generations, but has the ability to sustain businesses of all types from museums, elite shopping to a working mariner, as good as the ones you see abroad but better!!.... Need to provide good clean quality transport links to and from this dock from a maglev to mini tourist train for all, don't sell out and let the brewery industry take over and the usual suspects take over!! A design as good as the Deep...... you can't go wrong!

My own father sailed from this DOCK as "spare hand " on many Hull Trawlers. He has unfortunately died, but was always in favour of a scheme such as this. We owe it to the memory of men like my father and for all the lads that were lost at sea, to build something in there memory. Please God it gets the backing it needs.

I am a newly qualified primary school teacher in Hull and I am very eager to teach my children about the history of the fishing industry of Hull. I wonder if anybody has any artefacts/objects that may aid my teaching, or know where I may be able to find some. I think it is important that the children are excited to learn about their history. Even a fisherman that would be willing to talk to the class? Any information would be greatly appreciated!

We walked along the Trans-Pennine Trail from Brough to Hull this week. It was with dismay we came across the rather frightening dereliction surrounding the entrance to St Andrew's lock. It's such a shame this area is not sensitively preserved as a memorial to Hull's fishing fleet. The area is obviously important to many people as evidenced by the flowers and memorials to parents and relatives.

What a fantastic idea,of course this should have been done years ago,but it's never to late. you have to give credit to the lads who have kept this dream alive, because without their faith and dedication we would have nothing to remember the many men who lost their lives bringing food to our tables. These docks should never have been filled in , in the first place. In my opinion they(which ever council was representing this City) wanted to sweep anything regarding our fishing industry under the carpet, otherwise like Liverpool they would have had the foresight to keep our docks open and utilised them.water is a great attraction to all,as we all know. So yes let's hope our representatives in the council wake up and rectify their ignorance.like I say, this is only my opinion.

And why the hell not do it,it can work out really well with a little effort and a lot of lottery money, how many ppl off Hessle Road like ballet, yet they got £200 million for that to happen tickets at £200 each, bet you couldn't get a bus load together from Hull to pay £200 each to see a ballet, but this project would suite us old ins OAPs all schools, ppl from far and wide would come to see it,so come on you Hull City Council help, tax man you took billions in taxes of Hessle road, brewery also took masses of money from Fishermen,so let's get this project going and as a x building trade man I offer my series's for free and I know a lot like me

This would be wonderful for the City. Would be one of the best (if not the best) tourist attraction in the North of England. Surely anyone with any foresight at all would see what this site could become. Surely Hull City Councillors would not be stupid enough let this opportunity pass them by, by allowing Lord Line Building to be demolished. What a golden opportunity this would be for the city and it would certainly put Hull firmly back on the map to become one of the top tourist attractions in Europe. We owe this to the brave trawlermen who never returned home. Please don't let this opportunity go.

Should develop it with some focus on also creating a botanical garden like in Singapore with the man made 'Super Trees'. Everyone would pass it on coming into the city by road, rail or ship then (if they ever actually build that cruise terminal on Alexandra dock!). Would be good access to it too for visitors coming off Clive Sully - save the congestion in the city centre. The Singaporean botanical gardens attract five million visitors a year. Show that Hull is also looking forward then as well as back

Pleased to see a proposal. However, other than the retention of the iconic Lord Line building - and of course the dock itself - the rest is possibly a bit "too modern". It would be better if it paid a little more recognition of the original key-side building architecture . . . including the small, numerous, fish merchants' "stands" (offices).

As a Hull East lad I have been concerned for many years about Hull losing its many precious examples of a Heritage that if it was anywhere else in UK would have resources poured into it NOW. The film brought me to tears of both pride and anger that this site should be left derelict. My friend was lost on his first trawler voyage. I drove a lorry onto the Dock supplying "soft" drinks! I work now trying to open old trading Routes back into Hull and Humber. I still visit the Hull Shipping Office building in Takoradi, Ghana. It goes beyond remembrance and starts to do what has been done well elsewhere. I am minded of Bremerhaven. They have an Emigration Museum there. This is not just about the past. These days they advise on issues such as the Syrian refugee crisis... Other ports have built from their maritime heritage - not to build a better yesterday; more to shape a viable future... Is there anything that The History Troupe can do? Can we do a performance to raise money? Support in other ways? www.facebook.com/thehistorytroupe Many thanks for this site Regards, Rob Bell

Paypal have no charge for charities when paying and the payment is funded by a bank account, debit card or PayPal balance, and no currency conversion is involved. If the Last Trip is a registered charity the charge for using a credit card is 1.4% + 20p. As an ex-Trawler Skipper myself, I would prefer this concept as it is less abstact than the others, and therefore more regognisable to the general public as a fishing memorial, however, there is one small problem with one of the proposed 'positions' of this piece, if (as in one of the illustrations) it is situated actually in the river, then it would need navigation lights, because even if it is close to shore, as long as there is water between it and the dry land, it constitutes being a 'vessel', and would therefore have to adhere to maritime regulations., I'm not being 'picky' but the simple answer is to have it fixed to the sloping shorline as in the second illustration.

Judging from the latest news in the Hull Daily Mail dated June 19 2015, titled : - 'Plans to kick-start facelift of derelict waterfront site', there is now more likelihood of this project reaching a successful conclusion. We listened to the Radio Humberside, David Burns Morning Show on the same day, and as a result, we feel that Mr Levison and Mr Fenton are committed to doing a great job on St. Andrew's Dock, and at the same time appropriately PRESERVING Hull's Fishing Heritage. This is just what Hull needs. It will bring visitors and money into the town and will celebrate its history. I can see it being a great resource for schools and local history groups too. Please not another drab retails park; the city is overloaded with shops and many areas are struggling to survive. If Liverpool and Bristol can do it -why can't Hull!

Something needs to be done! Walked along the riverside path to Hull from the Humber Bridge for the first time and was amazed by both the potential and the dereliction. Coming across what I now know to be bullnose I was really moved by the flowers etc and that it was obviously a site people visited. This really needs to be recognised. I then walked probably the worst footpaths I've ever been on in many years of walking to get into the city. It was full of litter, between chain link fences, really harsh. I used to work in the building with a gang of ex-trawlermen from Hessle Road in the 1980s so always felt an association with the area, and now find myself spending time round here. It was all they talked about, that and being at sea. They took me out on the town in Hessle Road more than once in the 1980s. Don't remember much!

Great concept. We need to promote Hull and tidying up the view for visitors from the A63 has got to happen. I visit the outer bullnose at lease twice a week looking outbound and think deeply of many lost friends and shipmates, then I turn around and look at the shear devastation due to a complete, not only of neglect but also a lack of respect to this once proud fishing industry which the City of Hull was built upon, and also the same lack of respect to all those lost soles who sailed through these lock gates never to return. I then close my eyes and envisage a suitable memorial in their memory. This fantastic concept has opened my eyes to my daydreams of what could and should be not only a fitting memorial but also a lasting legacy of this once proud industry and all those who were involved. Thank you for submitting such a wonderful concept which hopefully can be achieved and to which I fully support

Really like the look of this. Something needs to be done with this important piece of our heritage and there has to be a permanent memorial to all those who lost their lives doing what was one of the most demanding jobs ever. The old dock and buildings and Arctic Corsair moored here are essential elements as they are virtually all we have left of this once huge industry. Make it happen!

Bristol, Liverpool and Gloucester have all capitalised on their sea-faring heritage by developing unused docks into information and entertainment spaces with a mix of museums, cafe/bars and other entertainment offerings. At the moment St Andrews Dock is an eye-sore yet walking along the River Humber from the Bridge down to Victoria Dock and beyond could be a destination, especially as it could connect with the Wolds Way at one end and lead all the way to Spurn at the other.

It is just a wonderful concept and it would be such a fantastic sight to see. It really would be a fitting tribute to hull, the industry and the men who gave there lives for it and to it. There would be no need to try and raise a few pounds to build a monument (disgraceful Hull City council you should be ashamed) If only we had a forward thinking council with some real zeal about them it could be done and the money could be found. However I fear as always it will never happen with a labour council such as Hull has. The fishing industry has be confined to the past by them, not interested.

The ideas are great. Primarily it is the retention, restoration and preservation of the Lord Line building and the Dock itself that is key to the development site. It is this building that lends a historical importance to Hulls fishing heritage. The use of the building is not indicated or referenced in the text. I would like to see a respectful use of the building. One which pays homage to the working men and seamen of this city. Really not sure about the Interfaith freedom peace centre-do not understand this concept for the bull nose building. The other buildings could be seen anywhere else in the uk. But the LL building is unique to this town. Moorings/berths for old trawlers, ships that have connection with the city would make this development a viable modern venue that draws visitors to the area. Make Hull proud!

We did some research to try and dremnstoate that the sport of motocross is safe if not safer then traditional stick and ball sports. To do that we needed to find variable that would allow us to compare all sports. We used total contact/exposure time per event. In the sport of Motocross an individual athlete can total upwards of 3hrs total contact/exposure or riding time per event (practice 15min x 2 race 20-30min x 6 races. Baseball on the other hand averages 14 minutes contact/exposure for the entire team for one game. Football was 10min per athlete per game. We were able to dremnstoate that the sport of motocross is safe if not safer then other sports when you consider there are less injuries per exposure time then other sports.

I think the new plan to open up the dock again looks fantastic :) I would maybe suggest more greenery and commissioned artwork / sculpture. The "Reflection Garden" doesn't look much like a garden on the map. And the whole place looks a bit sterile with all that flat grey concrete. Also, I think it would be nice to incorporate cycle lanes and parking areas for easy access by cyclists; encouraging people to keep fit and leave the car at home. I moved back down Hessle Road a couple of years ago and know what the dock means to people in this area. I last went for a look last week and almost anything would be an improvement on how it is now. I think the banners showing photos of the fisherman are a nice touch. And I agree a heritage centre and updating the memorial is essential. It's so sad to see the tiny memorial where families still leave flowers. I can't imagine having to watch the place fall down around me as I went to do that. It must be heartbreaking. Let's get this project off the ground!

It's possibly too late already given the state of what is left, but I've always felt that some of the old buildings around the dock could have been preserved in the same manner as the Black Country museum, only with a nautical/fishing theme. As the article says, the area was once a self-contained little community with banks and chandlers etc, which always fascinated me. Some suitable preserved buildings together with ships in the docks could make a really unique maritime heritage centre.

Hull is and always was more than 'fish'. Lives were lost, found and remodelled here. Fashions started, supported and developed here. The port town is always a mix of things. The docks brought money and commerce, through the railways, the warehouses because of the massive amount of shipping potential. Retail is not the be all and end all. You can go anywhere, anytown and buy from the same high street stores. Let's have something different. Heritage Dock could be the window to reveal that not just to those that live in the Town but as a major tourist attraction to those outside it and help those that move into the city understand it. Break the mould, think beyond the short term. Create something that is built upon what was for what may yet be.

This particular plan envisaged by Andrew Fenton has my wholehearted approval. The centre- piece which is the silhouette of a typical sidewinder immediately captures and holds your attention. When I first saw the 'actual model' it immediately brought to mind the sadness I felt at the time of the triple trawler disaster, and all the other occasions later when trawlers and men (some of whom I had personally known) were lost. The site where the memorial will be positioned has ample room for a walkway and benches for relatives who choose to visit and meditate on the loss of their loved ones. It will serve many other useful purposes too. I believe that a locally based company such as InterTech deserves to be given preference over others further afield. We must never forget the thousands of Hull trawlermen who lost their lives at sea and who were responsible for bringing considerable prosperity to this city. It is imperative now that we forget our differences and unite to show the respect due to these brave men. It can be done, and should be done, without further delay.

It is so sad to see what has become of all of the old magnificent buildings and the current state of St Andrews dock. I think this stunning design has real presence and evokes emotion. Even those who have no connection to the fishing industry can't help but be moved by the trawler and what it stands for. This is by far the most fitting. The meaning is not lost in the "art" like the one STAND has put forward. My grandad was a fisherman and i think this design reflects how proud and brave these men were.

I come from a fishing family my dad went to sea all his life... it would be wonderful if this memorial could become a reality. Alot of brave and good men have been lost over the years, and i think this would be a fitting tribute. As a designer and a person living in Hull I feel this concept is a perfect concept for a memorial. The ship has so much symbolism and holds a lot of emotion... the rusty iron shape... the ideas behind it are so much more appropriate to the fisherman, Hull and culturally as a whole. Abstract impressionist sculptures and shapes do nothing for the fisherman an their families. This concept is my choice by far,

I think it is essential to link the City centre with the marina. There are not many places you will visit that do not have a focus around a bustling marina. Hull has a beautiful marina which needs opening up to more businesses/markets, pavement restaurants/bars etc and needs to be advertised and promoted as a fantastic place to be. The linked walkway is a must.

Fabulous idea, I have been saying this myself for years but did not know anyone was actually working on it. I had wrote to Alic Gill about this vey subject. My father was a trawlerman in the 50\'s and 60\'s, he described it as the hardest job in the world, and now in his 80\'s he still dreams of being at sea on a trawler. I was often on the dock as a child, and have returned several times as an adult to look at the derilict condition that was once so alive. Hull should be proud of its fishing heritage, these men helped feed a nation and make it great. They lived and died in ships, in seas far away from Hull. For good or bad Hull was a fishing town, and the dock would be a wonderfull place for a museum and heritage centre. The old Marr building should be restored, the last side winder trawler languishing in the River Hull brought into the dock, where it belongs, and other vessels too. What about one of the old Humber paddle wheelers, a light ship, and who knows what else. this is a great idea, and it must, not should, happen. I live abroad now, returning each year to my homeland. I am a proud Yorkshireman, born in Beverley, growing up in Brough, Son of a trawlerman. I fully support this.

I think this is a superb project that would bring back to life one of the most interesting areas of Hull\'s heritage. I think the video projects the scheme brilliantly and provides a great insight into how the area could be improved. Considering it’s a virtual creation, the footage captures the old and new perfectly and is very touching. Additionally, as the area forms a main visual entrance way to Hull, it would play a significant part in generating that all important first impression for people coming to the city. Let’s face it, the area is currently an eyesore at the moment, isn\'t it? Although, I\'m always a little dubious without seeing the costs and some understanding of what reliance there would be on the public purse to support the scheme. Anyway, don’t let this hint of negativity take anything away from a fantastic vision of what can be done to this historic part of the city. I’ll have one please!

I am a 65 year old trawlerman from Hull and for the past 10 years I\'ve been cruising the Arctic deep sea fishing grounds with my grandsons around Spitzbergen, Norway,Iceland,Greenland and Newfoundland. In these areas where trawlers have been lost, we pay tribute to the trawlermen who perished. All the Arctic ports have memorials to the hard lives of the trawlermen. It\'s about time Hull had its own memorial along the lines of the St.Andrew\'s Dock theme. This would be for the dock workers, the people and the trawlermen past and present who sacrificed so much for the town\'s fishing heritage. The only problem I foresee is opposition to the remembrance site due to it detracting from other regional tourist sites.

I think the plans hcc have are great, ive been tracing my dad and his family who where all from hull.he worked long and hard on the trawlers i think he whould be very inpressed with what is going on now,but we should not forget all those men who never came home.

What you have overlooked is that this dock has become a facinating natural area. We already have a marina and more than one retail park in Hull. How much more original it would be to retain this as a city centre nature reserve (in contrast to the manicured stricture of Queens gardens Queens Gardens) with the surroundings developed in a more vernacular relaxed style as a refuge from the bustle of the city.

GOOD

Laura n/a
Heritage Dock Concept
I have visited some of the heritage docks around the country (Portsmouth and Hartlepool) and this is the sort of visitor attraction that we need in Hull. It could perhaps display the Arctic Corsair and a Humber paddle steamer and would give this special place the countrywide acclaim that it deserves. My Great Grandad used to work on the ships that sailed out of this dock and people like him and the work they did should be remembered and commemorated.

GREAT

What can i say this plan is outstanding, if the Hull City Council want to improve our city and heritage then this is a fantastic way forward, what it needs is everyone in the City of Hull to start a petition to lobby the powers that be to get their heads out of the sand.

GOOD

Graham C. Marshall n/a
Heritage Dock Concept
Something like this has been needed for a long time. The concept is superb but there are a few hidden dangers in as much that so many changes are made to please everyone that you end up with a tacky theme park and not a living, breathing memorial.

Having a berth set aside for visiting vessels of interest is a good one but I\'m not convinced that \'Moby Dick\' fits in anywhere but a theme park. We\'ll see.

With more than a nod to my first paragraph perhaps the all important railway connection should be incorporated into the design. Rather than just have a brief glimpse of a fish train on a video lay a stretch of track and put an old locomotive and a rake of fish vans on them. The vans could be used to house displays of various aspects of the dock.

How close to becoming a reality is this?

I like the idea of a heritage dock as I have long thought much more should be made of our marina area and waterfront. I have a few ideas which could easily be incorporated around either the Marina or a regenerated St Andrews Heritage Dock and may compliment your proposals. I’d like to see life size bronze statues placed around the dockside with information boards depicting scenes from our fishing heritage, trawler men, bobbers, filleters, women net braiding etc. My inspiration for this comes from the boat quay in Singapore where they have excellent statues telling the story of the colony through the various merchants and tradesmen going about their business. Dublin also uses a similar idea for its famine memorial. The quality of bronze statue needs to be equal to our existing emigrants statue near the new marina office blocks, which is duplicated on the Albert Dock in Liverpool, another model for what we can aspire to in Hull. We can also use my idea for an opportunity to finally replace the inadequate Mick Ronson tribute in Queens Gardens with a new performance stage on the heritage dock. I propose the famous lyric “sailors fighting in the dance hall” from David Bowie’s song Life On Mars which featured Hull’s own Mick Ronson be used for a themed scene next to a new quayside stage. This scene can combine the story of Hessle Roads returning trawlermen, flush with cash, as the hard living weekend millionaires they were with an often overlooked part a Hull lad played in our rock music heritage. The feature stage will allow live music to really bring the old dock back to life in the summer festival season.

What an excellent idea. This is a welcome design for the city. Instead of entering the city and looking at an eyesore, you could be entering the city looking at modern design. While it also been a memorial to all those lost at Sea. For me this deals with 2 major problems that Hull has a city.

Love the video , excellent ideas with the memorials to all those lost at sea, but like with most historical places situated in hull seem deemed for the history books because HCC only look for profit and that area would be primed for real estate just like the old fruit market area.

The number of negative comments on here provides us with precisely the reason why Hull is stagnating compared with Liverpool, Birmingham, Newcastle et al. Those with any nouse who grow up in Hull generally go elsewhere to cities where their ideas are more likely to be embraced rather than ridiculed.

The fact that we have someone here who lives and works locally and who is prepared to put time, money and effort into an idea that is focused on their own city should be applauded. As Mr. Fenton has said, he has been spurred into action by the inaction of others.

What would people prefer, to allow the remaining talent in Hull to be directed away from the city so that Liverpools and the Birminghams of this world are the beneficiaries (again), or would they not rather someone from Hull brought the ideas to the table so that their talents remain in Hull giving the city exactly the platform that is needed to develop and potentially puts the city in a position where it can realistically compete and be compared with these other great UK Cities?

What Hull clearly needs to do is invest in education, as it is patent that there is a basic problem with literacy! Where in this article does it say that KUHCC has employed Inter Tech as a consultant? The way that I understand it is that Inter Tech have carried out this work at their own expense, for which I think they should be congratulated. Granted, the scheme may well never come to fruition, but the web site is a great broadside at KUHCC, and show what Hull as a city could achieve if they had a council who had some vision, and who stopped wasting money like it was going out of fashion!!!
